Early season tournaments gave Richmond the opportunity to play high-quality teams in previous years, such as the University of Missouri and Purdue University. This year, it's the University of Illinois and possibly Rutgers University.

The first two games of the year, the University of Richmond had to rely on a small freshman guard and a sophomore point guard with no career starts entering this year for scoring. On Thursday night, that small freshman still was one of Richmond's top scorers, but it was a pair of upperclassmen that had the biggest points.

Right above the "1988" on that banner is the phrase "Sweet 16," the only banner in the arena highlighting how far the Spiders advanced in the tournament.

As college basketball fans around the nation watched the 11 seed VCU Rams knock off Kansas in the Elite Eight last Sunday, I can only assume there was a mixed bag of emotions. For those whose brackets had gone down with the likes of Pittsburgh or Duke, I bet it was great fun to watch David take down Goliath. For others, like me, the bracket officially flat-lined with Jamie Skeen's triumphant ball heave into the crowd of black and yellow as the clock hit zero. As for those VCU fans ... well, Sunday night probably got reckless.
