With the start of another school year only a couple days away, anticipation is starting to set into every new and returning Spider. Summer vacation was surely filled with great memories, valuable work experiences, family time or much-needed relaxation, but the point of summer has come when we’re eager to get back to school. With students beginning to move in this week and the excitement levels getting higher, here are a few thoughts that every Spider has after getting back to school:
Entering freshman year of college will be one of the most emotionally draining experiences of your young life.
Whether you are a returning student, staff or faculty member, alumni who call the Richmond area home or a member of the class of 2018, The Collegian wishes you a warm welcome to the start of this new academic year. Every fresh semester is unique and exciting, but the fall of 2014 should be truly dynamic. We have a freshman class that flaunts 331 national honor society members and represents 32 different countries. We welcome our new provost, Jacquelyn S. Fetrow, as she embarks on her inaugural fall at Richmond. We celebrate the history of our university with the centennial year of Westhampton College. And for those of us who have been here for a while, we enter this fall with nostalgic warmth as this is the final fall that President Ayers will occupy his desk in Maryland Hall.
At the dawn of freshman orientation week, a resident in Marsh Hall was watching football with his roommate. "Every time a good play happened, we heard a bunch of people cheering," Michael Marino said. The two wondered if their hallmates were watching the same game, so they wandered down the hallway to a lounge that had been converted into a quad.
As sophomores, many of my friends were upset last year because they received high lottery numbers and thus were forced to live on the Richmond ("freshman") side of campus this year.
Westhampton Lake is like homework for University of Richmond students -- it can't be avoided.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A U.S. District Court released a University of Richmond and Georgetown University student to the custody of their fathers on Oct. 27 until their next D.C. court date, which is scheduled for Jan. 24.

For all who don't know, Proclamation Night and Investiture are ceremonies that first-year students and seniors partake in together. (Proclamation Night being for the women and Investiture being for the men.)
Recently I've been waking up with night sweats and experiencing a warm and fuzzy feeling inside. At first, I suspected that I had been bitten by a radioactive spider and decided that before I was ready to take on the Green Goblin, I would have to trade in my identity for a red and blue mesh onesy from American Apparel (what? I might as well get something I can wear to the lodges, too).
Nearly an hour after GreenUR's bike sale began, all 13 bikes were sold.
Dear Natasha,
A housing crisis in 2009 changed Gray Court, a previously all-male dormitory, into a co-ed environment.
Dear Collegian,
As dozens of seniors walked to class on Thursday morning, they sported the same fluorescent wristband on their arms. Regardless of the fact that they were hungover, or tired, or just plain regretful that they spent the majority of their Dining Dollars the night before, most seniors on campus were excited about the re-opening of The Cellar.
SAT scores for incoming classes at the University of Richmond have dropped significantly in recent years. For the graduated class of 2006, the following range, 1240-1390, reflects the middle half of the class.
I saw The Collegian, and the article, "The Dos and Don'ts of Freshman Year" by Kristy Burkhardt caught my eye. As a freshman, I was curious and began reading the article, hoping for some advice that would be useful for the coming year. However, as I read I was greatly disappointed.
It's that time of year again. 'Tis the season for unfamiliar faces, restocked Dining Dollars and the sound of girls squealing ("Oh my God, girlfriend, shut up! You are so tan!").
