SAN ANTONIO — The University of Kansas connected on nearly half of its three-pointers as it got by the University of Richmond, 77-57, Friday night at the Alamodome in San Antonio in the Sweet 16 of the 2011 NCAA tournament. The loss ends the careers of Richmond's five seniors. The three four-year seniors in that group were responsible for 91 wins and included one of the school's best players in Kevin Anderson. Richmond reached the Sweet 16 for the second time in school history after defeating No. 5 Vanderbilt University and No. 13 Morehead State University the previous weekend at Pepsi Center in Denver.

DENVER — After receiving a 12 seed despite winning the Atlantic 10 Conference title and automatic berth, there were questions about whether the Spiders would have made the tournament had they lost the A-10 title game. Richmond, which admittedly felt slighted by the low seeding, played like it as it defeated No. 5 Vanderbilt University in the second round and then No. 13 Morehead State University, 65-48, to get to San Antonio.

DENVER — The No. 12 seed University of Richmond upset No. 5 Vanderbilt, 69-66, Thursday afternoon at Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo. Senior Kevin Anderson scored nine straight points as Richmond went on a 9-0 run to turn a three-point deficit into Richmond's first lead of the game at 51-48 with 12:04 left to play in the game. "We don't want to be one-and-done," Anderson said. "We're excited for this win. We want to keep looking forward into this tournament, not just being satisfied with this win. ... We won one game, but didn't win the tournament. That's our ultimate goal."

• The Washington Redskins cut one of its more charismatic and productive players Monday when the front office released runningback Clinton Portis. Portis was hampered with injuries during the past two seasons, and as a result, he only played 13 games. Portis leaves The District 77 yards short of 10,000 career rushing yards and leaves the Skins 648 yards shy of one of his oft-stated goals -- Hall of Famer John Riggins' franchise record. Always a big talker, Portis' mouth often got him into trouble, but his creative costumes during the 2005 season may have helped the team reach the playoffs for the first time in six years. Let's hope that the Skins draft another colorful character, then maybe they will make the playoffs again. Perhaps our own Martin Parker will be that colorful character for the Skins.

• Minnesota Vikings tackle Bryant McKinnie doesn't seem to be worried about the possibility of an NFL strike next year. At the NBA All-Star "Kick Off Party" at MyHouse nightclub, hosted by rapper Rick Ross and model Rosa Acosta, the 6'8" 335 pounder reportedly ordered more than 15 bottles of expensive champagne, amounting to a bar tab in excess of $100,000. The bottles of champagne were so big that the entire club stopped to watch the wait staff bring them to McKinnie's area. He is set to make $4.9 million in 2011. Let's hope there is no strike, otherwise his bottle-popping potential could be severely hampered.

• The dog days are over for the Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback Michael Vick. The front office tagged Vick with franchise status on Tuesday. In addition, Eagles officials said they placed their transition tag on kicker David Akers. Vick made $5.25 million in 2010 but will make an estimated $20 million -- the average salary of the five highest-paid quarterbacks in the league -- as the Eagles' franchise player. The NFL continues to throw bones to Vick as he was selected to start the Pro Bowl last month, his fourth trip to Hawaii in eight seasons. The Eagles were 10-7 overall and 8-3 in games Vick started and finished. It looks as though Philly fans are ready to rub this bad dog's stomach and give him a nice doghouse.

• Cleveland Cavaliers fans have even more reason to Tweet "SMH" (shaking my head) after Monday night's game against the Dallas Mavericks. The Cavaliers lost their way into the NBA record book as their skid continued to 25 straight losses. But the Cavs' most recent loss wasn't a blow-out. It was the kind of loss that involved a lot of head-slapping and "what were you thinking!" plays synonymous with a team that can't do anything right. Cleveland set the single-season consecutive loss record a few days ago, but the NBA keeps an overall losing streak record that takes into account slides stretched over two seasons. Looks as though the Cavs post-LeBron James are making history, but for all the wrong reasons.
