Women's soccer in top third of A-10 standings

Freshman forward Kat Russell's second goal of the season led the University of Richmond women's soccer team to its ninth win of the season, 1-0 over the University of Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon at First Market Stadium.

Russell's goal came at the 65th minute when Massachusetts was unable to clear the ball after a Richmond corner kick. Senior halfback Sarah Hilt assisted on the goal after her shot hit the crossbar and deflected to Russell in front of the net.

The Spiders managed only one goal, but dominated the Minutewomen in time of possession while outshooting them 20-7. Head coach Peter Albright praised his players for the win, but told them to focus on capitalizing on their opportunities.

"We made the game more even than it needed to be," Albright said.

Richmond goalkeeper Andrea Young made five saves to secure the team's sixth shutout of the season. Junior halfback Carter Blair helped Young keep the Minutewomen from scoring by playing a solid game on defense, Albright said.

"Carter made so many good plays look easy," Albright said. "She really played well."

The win improved Richmond's record to 9-2-1, and 3-1 in Atlantic-10 play. The team also remained undefeated at home this season and earned three points in the conference standings.

"Sunday games are hard," Albright said, "but we know if we outwork a team for 90 minutes, the breaks will come our way."

The Spiders also won on Friday, defeating the University of Rhode Island 2-0, and Albright was pleased with the two-win weekend.

"The Friday-Sunday schedule is tough, so getting six points on a weekend is a great weekend," he said.

The Spiders will travel to Duquesne University for their next game at 5 p.m. on Friday Oct. 10, when they will look to win their fourth A-10 game.

"The conference is starting to settle itself out," Albright said. "We're moving into the top third [in the standings] and we have the motivation to stay there."
