Dear Gabby: Socially awkward "hi"

When should I say hi and when should I not? What kind of wave is the least socially awkward when I'm walking through the commons and around campus?

-- Waving Outside Weinstein Hall

Dear Waving,

The Commons is definitely a breeding ground for awkward moments, so no worries, you're not alone! Here are my tips for waving etiquette:

1. Waving is really only necessary when you've made eye contact with your friend or acquaintance (or even just a fellow student if you're feeling especially cordial) so don't feel the need to flag someone down if they haven't noticed your presence (they're probably still reeling from the class they just left or headed to D-Hall and have a panini on the mind).

2. Regarding the level of wave-factor, try to match your enthusiasm to theirs. If a guy gives you the chin-up, just smile in return. If someone stops, smiles, waves and asks how your day is, you don't want to keep walking and ignore them ... that's just rude.

3. If all else fails, a smile and a "Hey!" always works. And don't be embarrassed if your voice raises three octaves when exclaming your greeting. It happens to the best of us.

Good luck avoiding awkward interactions!
