Basketball season starts with Spider Mayhem on Friday

Spider Mayhem will help tip-off the men's and women's basketball season at 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness.

The teams will compete against student groups in 3-point competitions and slam-dunk contests.

During last year's Nov. 5 dunk contest, University of Richmond junior Kevin Smith's dunk earned the No. 1 spot on ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10 Plays of the Day.

Spider Mayhem attendants will receive free Papa John's Pizza and Richmond Rowdies shot glasses. Student groups will compete in a bat-spin to win $150 for their organization, or participate in a costume contest to support the university's 11th annual Trick or Treat Street, which helps to raise funds for a liver transplant for a 4-year-old Richmond boy. Students will also have the opportunity to win prizes, such as free airline tickets and a full tuition.
