Scott granted continuance for DWI case

A Henrico County judge granted former University of Richmond football coach Latrell Scott's request for a continuance on his case stemming from his Aug. 22 arrest on a charge of DWI.

Scott, 36, was charged with his second DWI in a five to 10 year span, following a DWI in 2004 when he was an assistant coach at Virginia Military Institute. According to a report in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Scott served five days in jail, was fined $500 and had his license suspended for a year after that arrest.

An adjudicatory hearing was scheduled in the Henrico County Courthouse for Sept. 27, and a judge was scheduled to either rule if the allegations were supported by evidence or charge Scott with a misdemeanor.

That hearing will now take place at 10 a.m. on Nov. 10.

According to the Henrico County court website, subsequent DUIs "result in increased fines, mandatory minimum jail sentences, and longer license suspensions."

Scott was also charged with refusing a breathalyzer after a state trooper pulled Scott over on Interstate 64.

A call to Scott's attorney, W. Joseph Owen III, was not returned.

Scott resigned as coach of the football team following his second arrest 10 days before the start of the season. Offensive coordinator Wayne Lineburg was named interim coach that day and has since led the Spiders to a 3-2 record.

Athletic Director Jim Miller said that when Scott was hired in 2009 he was aware of Scott's previous arrest.

"I think it was clearly understood that this was an opportunity for coach Scott and that it was very important that there not be a second occurrence," Miller said at a press conference the day Scott resigned.

At the time of his hiring, Scott was the youngest coach in the FCS at 34.

On April 8, 2011, Scott was cited for making an improper turn in Henrico County. He was found guilty in absentia and fined $30.
