Sports clubs hold rush to recruit new members

Representatives from 30 sports club teams set up booths in the Forum for the University of Richmond's Sports Club Rush to recruit new members for the school year.

The event was held Friday from 3 to 6 p.m.

Members handed out candy, stickers and pamphlets while music played and students played games.

"We're looking for committed players, and we would like to win a couple of games," said Jillian Husband, a sophomore on the club soccer team.

The women's club soccer team had a rough year last year, losing all of its games, she said. Club soccer is trying to recruit players who have played before, want to have fun and will show up to every practice, she said.

The club level teams at the university have high aspirations for this year.

"Our team is planning to go to nationals this year," said John Patteson, a sophomore member of the club squash team.

Patteson, who has been playing squash since ninth grade, started the team last year. The team currently has four members, and it is hoping to find a fifth member, which is the amount required to play, Patteson said.

Ultimate Frisbee players also have hopes of promoting the sport, said James Brown, a sophomore on the Ultimate Frisbee team.

"We are looking for tall, athletic people who are also good looking and like to party," Brown said jokingly.

Ultimate Frisbee has been a club at Richmond for four years. The main goal of the team is to go to nationals, Brown said.

The synchronized swimming team also has hopes of attending nationals, senior Jenny Jarboe said. There are currently four swimmers on the team, she said.

"This year we are trying to get whoever we can get," Jarboe said.

Members of the school's club Quidditch team are looking for people who want to have fun and are enthusiastic, said Katie Skipper, a sophomore on the team.

Lucia Anderson, the sports club's interim manager, said, "We're really excited about the event's turnout."

Anderson, who graduated from Richmond in 2011, was a member of club swimming as an undergraduate. She joined the sports club staff in February.
