Women’s tennis wins 4-1 against GMU

The University of Richmond women’s tennis team secured its first Atlantic 10 Conference victory on March 25 after defeating George Mason University at the Westhampton Tennis Courts, adding another win to its 3-8 overall record. 

In the singles matches, the Spiders went 5-1 against the Patriots. Fifth-year Emily Dunbar led UR at the first match and won 7-6 and 6-2. 

Senior Helene Heiburg was third in the lineup, and she defeated her opponent 6-0 and 6-1. Junior Marta Buendia wrapped up for the Spiders, defeating her opponent 6-4 and 6-1. 

Sophomore Carly Cohen and sophomore Sara Salemyr both competed in the singles matches but did not finish their matches. 

Junior Emily Garvin was the last Spider in the singles lineup and was defeated by GMU 6-0 and 6-1.

The order of finish for the singles matches was GMU in first, Heiberg in second followed by Buendia and Dunbar in third and fourth. 

Cohen bounced back in the doubles match with her partner Buendia, and they defeated their opponents 7-5. Dunbar and Salemyr defeated their opponents 6-1, while Heiberg and Garvin were defeated by the Patriots by two points with a final score of 6-4. 

The order of finish for the doubles was Dunbar/Salemyr in first, GMU in second and Cohen/Buendia in third. 

The UR women’s tennis team will play again at the Kingsmill Spring Intercollegiate in Williamsburg on March 29.
