Ongoing construction at Pitt Field on Sept. 23.

Construction on the baseball team’s Pitt Field is set to be completed in the coming weeks. A plaza behind right field will create additional space and seating for fans, said David Walsh, deputy athletic director and chief of operations.

When construction began back in April, University of Richmond students, staff and faculty may have noticed one of the entrances to X-Lot was obstructed and closed at times. As construction wraps up, the entrance is now back to normal and the new plaza is almost ready to be used for the spring.

The plaza will provide Spider fans with more space to watch baseball games. Fans can bring their own chairs if they would like to sit on the terrace in the plaza, but there will also be benches available in front of the terrace, as well as turf berms seating. The new plaza will also include dedicated bathrooms for fans.

“We’re just ecstatic about what we’ve got here,” Head Coach Tracy Woodson said about the plaza in a video on the Spider Athletics’ YouTube page.

Along with the plaza, a new indoor batting and pitching facility is set to be built this winter. The new indoor practice facility will be constructed down the left field line and will include two full batting cages and pitching mounds with garage doors down each side, allowing for natural airflow through the facility.

“[We’re] just really excited to see all the new resources and things we’re gonna have to develop us and take us to the next level,” graduate student pitcher Brenden Argomaniz said in the video.
