The La Salle University Explorers claimed a 1-0 victory against the field hockey team at Crenshaw Field on Oct. 7.
La Salle struck late in the last period to secure its victory over the Spiders. This was the first time La Salle had defeated UR since its 2-1 win back in 2014. During that game in 2014, the Spiders were outshot by La Salle 18-16. Overall UR had a 19-5 record against La Salle before this season’s match took place.
In the first period, the Spiders had only one attempt on target compared to La Salle’s three. The Spiders had most of the possession, but could not break through the Explorer’s defense.
The Spiders attempted three more shots in the second period while La Salle could register one. The half ended goalless with both teams having four shots on target.
In the second half as both teams started to commit fouls. La Salle picked up two green cards and UR was given two green cards and one yellow card. Toward the end of the third period, the Spiders got three successive corners, giving them chances to break the deadlock. However, the third period remained 0-0 with UR having nine shots to La Salle’s seven.
The Explorers scored a pool shot past the keeper at 57:05 in the fourth period. The Spiders continued to push to find an equalizer. In the last minute of the game, UR gave up a penalty stroke which was disallowed by the referee. The game finished with La Salle leaving as 1-0 victors.
The UR goalkeeper, senior Erika Latta, made two saves during the game. Midfielder senior Lindsey Frank took three shots against La Salle.
