UR Weekly Roundup | Week of Oct. 23

This week has a lot in store thanks to the overlapping of homecoming and Halloween weekend. Check out some events happening both on and off campus below. 

Stuff-A-Plushie: Spider Pride Edition

Monday 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Come to the Current in the Tyler Haynes Commons to kick off homecoming week and a chance to make your own plushie. The first 250 students to arrive will also get a free homecoming t-shirt from SpiderBoard.

Legacy of Black Astronauts

Wednesday 6 p.m.

Hosted by the University of Richmond and the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, this talk will highlight the contributions of Black astronauts with two Virginia astronauts, Robert Satcher and Leland Melvin, ‘86, who were onboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 2009. To obtain free tickets and transportation to the event, you can register here. 

Silent Disco

Wednesday 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

If you are looking for ways to unwind in the middle of the week, make your way to Spider Hall in the Queally Athletics Center for an evening of dance and enjoy free food courtesy of FiftyOne Pizza and Pearl’s Cupcakes. 

UR Players Haunted House

Thursday and Friday

In keeping with tradition, the University Players, a UR student theater group, is bringing back its haunted house for another thrilling Halloween season. For those seeking an eerie and spine-chilling adventure on campus, make sure you visit the Modlin Center for the Arts between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. on either day. 

J.P. Sniadecki at Tucker-Boatwright Festival

Friday 7 p.m.

As part of the 2023-2024 Tucker-Boatwright Festival of Literature and Arts, there will be a screening of “CHAIQIAN/DEMOLITION,” a 2008 film by J.P. Sniadecki, in the Ukrop Auditorium. The film follows the story of 30 migrant workers who came to the city of Chengdu, China, from the countryside, and their connection to the changes in the city’s landscape, according to Sniadecki’s website. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session hosted by art and art history professor Jeremy Drummond and film studies professor Sonja Bertucci.

You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today

Sunday 8 p.m.

If you are in the mood for some comedy, Steve Martin and Martin Short are in town this weekend, performing at the Altria Theater. With a friendship formed over three decades, starting when they met on the set of the 1986 film "Three Amigos," Martin and Short have been touring together since 2015, when they performed their first live show called "A Very Stupid Conversation." Tickets start at $69.50.
