Kevin Alloway was sitting in the Jepson Quadrangle, watching an improvisation show, when, out of the black of night, a pair of balled-up socks whizzed past his head. An attempt had been made on his life. He looked around, but the would-be assassin was nowhere to be found, he said.

Last weekend's annual Ring Dance was held at the Jefferson Hotel to honor the Westhampton Class of 2013. Ticket sales for this year's event were reportedly down from previous years. It is tradition for the junior women to wear white dresses and be escorted down the front staircase by their fathers and non-junior women who attend are expected to wear black.

I get it. Some Westhampton students view Ring Dance as a flawed tradition, and they are fully entitled to their views as members of our class. However, I strongly believe that Ms. Bevels' Jan. 26 article, "Ring Dance ticket sales decrease," took a very one-sided approach to the topic. The article mentioned several women expressing their various opinions about Ring Dance. Presumably this sample should have accurately reflected the opinions of junior women as a whole, yet I found myself overwhelmed with the amount of anti-Ring Dance sentiment included in the article. I would argue that this opinion is not indicative of the majority of the class of 2013. More than 65 percent of us still will be in attendance, yet every year The Collegian features virtually the same article with a few individuals vocally dissenting, and as a junior now myself, I'm tired of reading it. Where is the representation for the large population of students who are actually excited for Ring Dance?

On Feb. 4, members of the junior class of Westhampton College will file into the Jefferson Hotel in long, white dresses, their faces beaming. But there will be fewer faces in the crowd this year.

InLight Richmond, a light-based art show, took place in historic Tredegar on Fri., Oct. 21. The exhibition spanned from Dominion Resources to the American Civil War Center. This site was especially significant because it marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

What kind of night has the potential for nip slips, reckless hookups, crouching over Porta Potty seats and stab wounds? That's right, you guessed it, the toga social!

A recent outbreak of pink eye on campus has the University of Richmond's health center staff preaching one thing: Wash your hands.

OK, I know that I wrote about Ring Dance for last week's wonderful edition of The Collegian, but to be honest, Ring Dance and Ring Dance-associated activities took up my entire weekend, so I'm going to just write about it again since I haven't been able to explore any other hot topic social questions like, where do all those missing socks and hair ties end up?

We laugh at Snooki and her Jersey Shore posse as they dump three pounds of bronzer on their faces every time they go out. But are we laughing in disgust, or from experience? Honestly, I don't think these girls are much different from many today who would rather die than go pale. Even among those who are less extreme, bronzer is a key piece in most makeup bags and the tanning salon is at the top of most prom (and Ring Dance) to-do lists.

Members of the Westhampton College Class of 2012 participated in the 2011 Ring Dance ceremony Feb. 5 at the Jefferson Hotel in downtown Richmond. The event had more security than in past years in response to vandalism that occurred at last year's dance.

Contracted police and the Jefferson Hotel's own security guards will strictly enforce regulations at this year's Ring Dance, Westhampton College Deans Juliette Landphair and Kerry Fankhauser said.

It might be because I've been listening to Taylor Swift's new album on repeat since it came out, or perhaps it's the fact that I shopped online for wedding dresses yesterday during chapter with my roommate, or maybe it's because the last thing my apartmentmate and I did before bed last night was snuggle into the covers with my laptop on the hunt for the perfect engagement ring, but marriage is definitely in the air this week (and by week I mean the last three years of my life).

I am a Westhampton woman, but I have always been somewhat perplexed by what that means. I know Westhampton contains wonderfully bright and talented modern women, but I haven't seen that modernity reflected in Proclamation Night or Ring Dance. It bothers me that while Westhampton students are encouraged to be driven academically and socially, the Westhampton College traditions stay a reminder that, above all else, a Westhampton woman is a woman.

As a former editorialist for this very student paper, I know a thing or two about hitting the "Send" button too quickly, about not really thinking things over sufficiently before letting them get to print, about wanting a Mulligan after it's a little too late for one. So I am willing to give my fellow alumnus David Anderton the benefit of the doubt, to believe he was not fueled by malice when he referred to the current Richmond students as "a self-absorbed and over-indulged group of apathetic human beings" in a letter to the editor earlier this week. However, the topic of Spider spirit is one that is inevitably raised almost annually, yet nothing constructive seems to come from it. So, for what it's worth, I'd like to share a few thoughts on the issue.

When entering a University Forest Apartment on campus, a visitor would expect to see band posters, gaming systems, photographs and sports paraphernalia. But this is not the case in the apartment where Elizabeth Timmis lives.
