Inside a tucked-away wing of the Gottwald Science Center, the hum of filtration systems and the glow of stacked aquatic tanks fill a maze of research rooms: the habitat for hundreds of animals under study. The facility is the center of UR’s expanding biomedical research efforts and the workplace of the first full-time specialist hired to care for them.

It was a Wednesday evening unlike any other. The Heilman Dining Center’s standard beige and gray walls were accented with kente cloth, featuring red, gold, and green. The sound of live African drums replaced the usual generic pop music that played on the speakers. Stations that routinely served meatloaf and mashed potatoes instead had cassava fries and banana fritters.

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, 23 Richmond College Student Government members gathered in a circle inside the Whitehurst Living Room for a weekly meeting. The energy was initially stiff. Roll was called. A guest speaker gave a talk. A handful of senators typed away on their laptops. Others stared intently at the wall or their phones. In the midst of mundane “save the date” announcements and “dietary restriction” requests, RCSGA senator Emma McCauley’s voice stood out.

The vibrant retro red, white and green of Jarrod Hendricks’ windbreaker popped against the sea of gray van-roof directly above him. The window to his right exhibited the tapestry of a road trip: a tree, a building, a dash of purple, another car. The streaks of color in and out of the van were a mimicry of those on the cover of the album he helped create four years ago.

“Can you guys see this?” Wyatt Clem asked as the camera swung away from him, emphasizing his blurred background. “We’re at a Lowe’s right now,” he said with a smile. He was leaning slightly forward, his blonde hair draping his shoulders. Shawn Abhari, who was closer to the camera and sitting next to Clem, had moved the phone camera back to its original vertical position on the Zoom call.

For University of Richmond senior Christina Currie and her twin sister, Katie Currie, competing on "Wheel of Fortune" was a dream come true. Not only did the sisters walk away with an impressive total of $88,248 in winnings and trips to Maui and Portugal, but with memories of a competition they described as both nerve-racking and exhilarating.
