Talented basketball players gathered last Saturday at the Carnesecca Arena of St. John's University in a charity basketball game to honor two former University of Richmond students, Jamie and Paige Malone, as well as Michael Mulhall. The three friends died in a car crash last summer in Long Island, N.Y.
The Jamie and Paige Malone Scholarship has raised more than $56,000 since it was established in honor of the Malone sisters, said Brian Eckert, media relations director for the University of Richmond.
As Diane and Daphne Malone, the mother and sister of Jamie and Paige Malone, carried two candles and led more than a dozen others down the aisle of the Cannon Memorial Chapel at the University of Richmond Saturday, three musicians played a song entitled "Pachelbel Meets U2: With or Without You."
As hundreds of mourners stood quietly outside of the Our Lady of Victory church in Floral Park, N.Y., on the morning of July 19, thunder rolled and rain began to fall, but no one moved. Minutes later, when hundreds more filed out of the church to pay their final respects to Jamie and Paige Malone, the sun shone brightly.
