Brian
King sauntered on stage Saturday night with only his drummer, David
Prowse, aiding him. King and Prowse, members of the band Japandroids, charged
into their lead single, “Near to the Wild Heart of Life,” and mid-verse, King
hocked a loogie the size of a small bird that clung to an oversized amp for the
entire show.

College students understand the delight that arises upon receiving a package from home. The idea that our parents have packed our favorite snacks and extra supplies — along with the fact that we will not have to go out and buy these items ourselves — cheers us up like nothing else.

It is hard to slip down the wet, tiled sidewalks of Taipei, Taiwan without eventually finding yourself perched on a plastic stool, dabbing garlic chili paste onto a fresh omelet.

Hurricane Harvey ravaged Houston just weeks ago, but for some it probably feels like months since the category 4 storm was in the public consciousness.

I’m no movie expert, but I know this much: When it comes to making a film about a national tragedy that robbed nearly 3,000 people of their lives, spawned wars, shaped both foreign and domestic policy for years and still looms as a vindictive colossus over the memories of millions, one must take special care.

When school let out for the summer last April, the first
thing I did was drive to Barnes and Noble.
For me, summer break is a three-month reading spree. I read about
15 books this summer, ranging from literary classics to fun novels for
the beach. Here are six books reviews from
my summer library.

“Interstellar” is a new
film from director Christopher Nolan starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne
Hathaway and Jessica Chastain; a five-star movie in my opinion. The film is a crowning achievement in the
sci-fi genre, but one that falls just short of masterpiece status.
“Interstellar” deals with such gigantic ideas such as our place in the cosmos,
while also contemplating the meaning of human life when our planet
cannot sustain us anymore.

University of Richmond already has one rock star alumnus, Lumineers singer Wesley Schultz, but She's a Legend's Alex McDilda, Richmond College '14, and Camden Cantwell, RC '13, may not be far behind. The band's first album, "Flight Patterns and Fistfights," came out last month, and is available on iTunes, Spotify and the band's website.

“Gone Girl” is the new film from auteur director David Fincher. The movie stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike as Nick and Amy Dunne, a seemingly happy all-American couple living in the suburbs outside of St. Louis. Affleck gives the best performance of his career in this movie, as he is perfectly suited to play this role. Pike also gives a transformative performance in her breakthrough role as Amazing Amy. The movie is based on author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel of the same name.

The season premiere of “The Walking Dead” aired with a bang on Sunday night. After a long wait over the summer, it was exhilarating to return to our heroes as they faced yet another life-altering crisis. The major arc of the second half of the fourth season involved our group of survivors making their way toward the promise of sanctuary in Terminus, a place that had advertised itself as a safe haven from the calamity of the dead walking the earth. We were treated to a series of standalone episodes devoted to various members of the people who survived the battle with the governor at the prison. These episodes were meant to give us insight into who these people were as opposed to just fodder for the various living and dead enemies around. Some episodes were more successful than others, but on the whole they did a good job of building up to the season's end.

I have been meaning to try Mellow Mushroom for a while now. When it opened in Carytown a few months ago, there was a ton of hype around the restaurant, and it always seemed to be packed. I heard stories of long waits, never being able to get a table, and chilled-out waiters who were enjoyable but not the fastest servers.

The Princeton Review selected University of Richmond for its 2014 list of 75 best value private colleges, praising its combination of academic opportunities of a large research university and advantages of a small liberal arts college.

I've heard tons of good reviews about the relatively new burger place in town called Burger Bach, and finally had a chance to try it this past weekend. Burger Bach (pronounced "batch") is a "New Zealand inspired gastronomical public house," aka nice burger joint right on the edge of Carytown. When we walked into the restaurant on Sunday night, it was very full but did not feel overwhelmingly packed and had a comfortable atmosphere. The space is not very big; it has a bar with seating, one long bar-height table that spans the length of the restaurant and is community type seating (meaning you will be seated right next to other parties) and booths lining the rest of the free wall space in the restaurant. It is not your typical layout; it almost promotes a sense of community.
