Another new head coach for men's tennis team

As far as Richmond men's tennis is concerned, there's a "new sheriff in town," first-year head coach Ben Johnson. Coaching changes among varsity college teams are common, but this particular varsity team has gone through a couple in a very short amount of time.

Work vs. play

This is not a column about school spirit. I know that the majority of Richmond students are proud to be Spiders, because if we weren't, then we would have transferred by now. We have some of the most architecturally beautiful buildings on campus, state-of-the-art facilities for academics and student life and, of course, plenty of schoolwork to keep us busy. But I thought that more people would have showed up for a gorgeous fall afternoon of football. I know midterms are upon us, and sometimes that comfy chair in Boatwright is hard to get out of (or, if you can leave the chair, it's only for a double-shot espresso mocha Frappuccino from 8:15). We, as students, are inundated with tons of papers to write, articles to read, films to watch, labs to test, paintings to paint, spreadsheets to compute and more. But don't you think you deserve a break from it all? A few hours spent absorbing some much-needed vitamin D from the sun and fresh air (if you spend too long in Boatwright, you forget what fresh air smells like because the fresh air in that little courtyard on B-1 is more nicotine-filled than oxygen-filled) can do the body and mind good.

Women's soccer gets back to basics before A-10s

They start with a warm-up that includes jogging, high knees and stretching, and then they move on to foot drills and scrimmages, all in the blistering Virginia heat that has just begun to subside despite the official change of seasons. The women on the University of Richmond's soccer team have been working hard to prepare for their three coming Atlantic 10 conference games. "The heat makes practices harder," freshman forward Becca Wann said, "but you have to play in it so [you] get used to it." The team's 2-1 victory against the University of North Carolina -- Wilmington on Sept.

Q&A with Spencer Schiff

Q: When did you start playing soccer? A: I first started playing soccer probably at the age of seven. Q: What's your favorite thing about soccer? A: Any game, no matter who is playing, any team has a great chance of winning because it is not about having plays or set pieces but rather who came to win and compete. Q: How do you prepare yourself for a game? A: I just try to think about what will make me have a successful game.

Media Timeout: 9/30/2010

? LeBron James practiced for the first time with the Miami Heat on Tuesday. Reports of King James fist-pumping after passing over a double-team that set up a teammate for a dunk, shouting instructions during drills and getting into an animated and heated argument with Dwyane Wade over a scoring dispute as practice was ending were just some of the antics in The King's new court.

Loss of a mascot

Mascots are a silly thing. If you stop and think about it, they can also be quite terrifying to small, innocent children who are overwhelmed by a large, stuffed spider towering above them.

Letter: Kick the students out of Robins Stadium

I thought I was going to get over this, but the more I think about it, the madder I get. I am fortunate enough to have tickets to the Richmond Spiders football games this year, but unfortunately, that also provided me with the opportunity to witness one of the most pathetic examples of student spirit I have ever seen. I'm not sure how many seats there are in the so-called "student section," but by the third quarter of last week's game, it was empty.

Jovan Smith has breakthrough game in loss against Delaware

The University of Richmond may employ a tailback-by-committee attack, but in its 34-13 loss on Saturday to the University of Delaware, it may have found a head for that committee. Redshirt freshman Jovan Smith ran for 102 yards on 10 carries to give Richmond its first 100-yard rusher this season.

Blue Hens' air attack too much for Spiders in CAA opener

In the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams, the University of Delaware Blue Hens used their overwhelming air attack, led by quarterback Pat Devlin's 240 passing yards to defeat the University of Richmond Spiders, 34-13, at Robins Stadium Saturday evening. The Blue Hens were first to score with a seven-yard run by freshman quarterback Trevor Sasek, but Richmond defensive lineman Martin Parker blocked the extra-point kick, leaving the score 6-0 to Delaware. That would be the only score of the first quarter, but Delaware's freshman running back Andrew Pierce scored on a two-yard run early in the second quarter.
