Philip Hart, professor emeritus of religion, dies at 87

When religion professor Frank Eakin was cleaning his mother's house after her death, he opened a drawer and stumbled upon a note from former Richmond professor and colleague, Philip Hart, he said. The note was sent unbeknownst to Eakin to his parents during his undergraduate career, and described the pleasure Hart had felt getting to know him, Eakin said.

Injury causes quarterback role reversal

At Saturday's homecoming game against Rhode Island, sophomore quarterback Michael Strauss threw for almost 200 yards and two touchdowns, and former senior starting quarterback John Laub sat on the sidelines taking mental notes of Strauss' performance. Critiquing Strauss' plays is one of the ways Laub, who suffered a broken ankle at the New Hamphshire game, has adapted to his role as team captain from the bench, he said. APO's Teeter for Tots raises about $1,000 for Friends Association

Alpha Phi Omega members raised about $1,000 last week to support The Friends Association for Children during its annual Teeter for Tots fundraiser. APO, University of Richmond's community service fraternity, held activities throughout the week, including an a capella concert sing-off, a dunk tank and multiple see-saws stationed in the University Forum and the dining hall. APO has held Teeter for Tots for 18 years, but certain changes were enacted to this year's fundraiser, APO President Amanda Minnitte said.

UR students use fall break to explore city of Richmond

A group of students used fall break as an opportunity to break out of the campus bubble and engage with the city of Richmond through a university-sponsored program focused on the environment, arts and community. Over three days, the group's activities included visits to the James River, Folk Festival, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Capitol. The first trip, on Saturday was to the South of the James Farmer's Market, an open-air market in Forest Hill Park where farmers and artisans sell locally grown and handmade items, such as baskets, wine and t-shirts, said senior Jolmi Minaya Suriel.

Media critic urges Richmond audience to challenge reality TV narratives

Media critic Jennifer Pozner told an audience Monday night to avoid mindless engagement when watching reality TV, which has functioned as backlash against women's rights, she said. Her talk, "Project Brainwash: Why Reality TV is Bad for Women," held in the Tyler Haynes Commons, was the first of three in the 2012-2013 speaker series sponsored by WILL and Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies.

Women's soccer wins first game in home opener against Wildcats

After a loss to William and Mary in Williamsburg on Wednesday, the University of Richmond's women's soccer team won its first game of the season during its home opener against Villanova University. The Spiders scored three first-half goals, defeating Villanova 3-1 Friday night in Robins Stadium. Villanova gained an early lead when sophomore midfielder Caitlin Forte netted a goal within the first minute of play.
