YAL supports broader options for voters

Young Americans for Liberty at University of Richmond cannot endorse political candidates in any election. However, our chapter strongly encourages voter education and increased voter turnout (especially college-age voters).

Ken Cuccinelli, Terry McAuliffe and libertarian candidate Robert Sarvis have all visited campus this semester to share their views with students and community members. Having the candidates come to our campus was positive as students had greater accessibility to each candidate. When students see the candidates and get to hear them speak about their ideas in person, students get more involved with politics and are more likely to vote.

We hope people continue to take advantage of similar politically educational opportunities in future elections and in general. For instance, our club meets at 9 p.m. Thursdays in the Think Tank and invites any student with any interest in promoting liberty (socially or economically) to show up.

Young Americans for Liberty at Richmond believes that including a third-party candidate such as Robert Sarvis is a step in the right direction. Having more people to choose from, especially in a race with two controversial major party candidates, allows people to vote for a candidate they support. Greater freedom in elections as a result of increased candidate diversity serves Virginia residents, such as the University of Richmond population.

As Richmond's YAL president, Diana Reighart, was quoted in a recent interview with USA Today:

"If you think about what you want and you vote that way instead of voting for a particular party just because that candidate could win, [the government] would benefit from that kind of citizen research and citizen awareness of politics." On Nov. 5, Young Americans for Liberty wants you to show up to the polling station and come out of the voting booth proud of who you voted for.
