Although senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke was able to score her 1000th point tonight, the Richmond offense still couldn’t get things going against VCU as the team fell 57-42.
After a great overtime win this past Sunday against St. Bonaventure, the Spiders managed to carry that momentum into this game opening up strong, leading 17-12 after the first quarter.
The team shot 32% and was led by sophomore Claire Holt who had seven points in the first quarter and finished the game with a team-high of 16. This, however, would be the only quarter of the game in which the team managed to score in double digits. The Spiders would go on to score seven points in the second quarter and nine points in both the third and fourth.
After a solid first quarter, things went downhill for the Spiders immediately, as they were heavily outscored in the second quarter 24-7. The team shot only 25% in large part due to the great defensive play by VCU.
The Rams went into halftime up 36-24 and carried their momentum into the second half, leading by 19 at one point in the third. The team would finish with nine blocks and seven steals. Junior Taya Robinson would lead the team in scoring with 17 points.
Despite their loss, the Spiders still managed to achieve a positive accolade with senior forward Jaide Hinds-Clarke scoring her 1000th point. Hinds-Clarke was seven points away coming into the game, and managed to finish with eight. Two points away, she had received her fourth foul early in the fourth quarter, putting her on the bench for some time and jeopardizing her chance to reach the accolade in this game.
With 3:54 left in the game, however, Hinds-Clarke managed to score her 1000th point with a three-pointer, making the game 51-40. Although Richmond ultimately failed to fully come back from the big deficit, the Robins Center crowd rejoiced in the moment of the senior’s accomplishment.
Hinds-Clarke becomes the 25th women in the program to score 1000 points. She also lead the team in rebounds with seven.
The Spiders head into the final games of the season with a 10-13 (3-6 in conference-play) record. The next game for the team will be against the La Salle Explorers on February 9th tipping off at 2 p.m.
