Last week, university community members cheered for the Spider basketball players and wished them luck as they loaded the bus and headed to the airport for Texas. The players put on their headphones, boarded their flight and were off to face Kansas the next night, leaving the Robins Center in their rear view. As college basketball fans around the nation watched the 11 seed VCU Rams knock off Kansas in the Elite Eight last Sunday, I can only assume there was a mixed bag of emotions. For those whose brackets had gone down with the likes of Pittsburgh or Duke, I bet it was great fun to watch David take down Goliath. As for those VCU fans ... well, Sunday night probably got reckless.

Alright, so let's clear things up here: I'm no longer an employee of The Collegian. I loved my time on staff, but during my last four weeks of college, I'm excited to be able to spill my opinions and reflections without having any of the constraints of a Collegian staffer or editor. As such, I will be brutally honest, occasionally self-serving and probably controversial in my columns during the next few weeks, so I hope you read, relate to and respond to them.

It's the fourth quarter for my fellow Collegian seniors and me. I'm sure Papa Spear and the rest of the journalism department had a collective cringe with my lede, which began with probably the most cliche saying in sports, but it's true. This is our last issue together, and seniors throughout the campus are wrapping up their theses, projects and more as we prepare for what lies ahead.
