The season opener for the University of Richmond and University of Virginia football teams this year will be one of mixed emotions. Both squads take the field at 6 p.m.
As Michael Whitt, a sports historian who works as the special projects assistant at the Virginia Baptist Historical Society, walked down the stairs into the library, he casually mentioned that some of the items in the "UR Football Comes Home" exhibit had belonged to his father. Former University of Richmond quarterback Eric Ward signed with the Atlanta Falcons on Monday after a weekend tryout. Ward joins former teammate Lawrence Sidbury Jr., who was selected in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft, on Atlanta's roster. Ward went undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft, but tried out for the New York Jets during their mini-camp following the draft.
The Gameday Committee, a group of campus leaders assigned to make plans for the opening of E. Claiborne Robins Stadium, held a forum on Tuesday to discuss its progress and answer questions from the community. Steve Bisese, vice president for student development, opened the meeting and was joined by other members of the 22-person committee, which has grown from an initial group of four people when it began meeting during Feb.
The defense won the annual spring football game, 54-23, Saturday afternoon. Special rules were in place that allowed the defense to score one point for a forced punt, a tackle for a loss or a broken-up pass; two points for a fourth-down stop, a sack or a two-point conversion stop; three points for a forced missed field goal, a forced three-and-out or a takeaway; and six points for scoring a touchdown.

A bone marrow drive will take place during the spring football game starting at 1 p.m. on April 10 at UR Stadium. "Any time we can be part of a cause that helps the community, that's important to us, doing things outside of football," head coach Latrell Scott said. The drives are important because they affect everyone in the community, he said. "If you took a survey of the team or the campus, a majority of people know someone affected by cancer," he said.

As I sit here on a beautiful Sunday afternoon penning my last column as the sports editor for The Collegian, I can't help but think about how I got to this point. When I applied to college, I wanted to go to a school with two things: a strong athletic program and a broadcast journalism department.
E. Claiborne Robins Stadium will bring Spider football to campus for the first time in the program's history, but the stadium's limited capacity will force student-ticketing protocol to change. The new stadium's seating capacity is 8,700, but because of season-ticket holders, visiting team fans and others, only about 1,500 seats will be designated for students, said Jana Ross, the assistant director of athletic marketing and fan development. Ross and Steve Bisese, the vice president for student development, have met with the Richmond College Student Government Association and Westhampton College Government Association to discuss some options for student seating.
New University of Richmond head football coach Latrell Scott hasn't even coached a practice yet, but he's already made his mark on Spider football for years to come. Seventeen high school players declared their commitment to play football, starting next season, for Scott and the Spiders by signing a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday.
