London, Sidbury making Richmond football history

The national championship wasn't the only first for the 2008 University of Richmond football team. In addition to the football team winning its first NCAA Football Championship Subdivision National Championship in 2008, two members of the team achieved firsts for the school. Head Coach Mike London was voted the American Football Coaches Association's FCS Coach of the Year, and senior defensive end Lawrence Sidbury Jr.

Spiders struggle in shooting, lose to Charlotte 62-55

The University of Richmond women's basketball team lost Tuesday afternoon at the Robins Center 62-55 to the Charlotte 49ers, falling to third place in the Atlantic 10 conference. The Spiders (16-5) shot poorly throughout the game, but nevertheless managed to stay in contention, even after Charlotte (14-6) pulled ahead several times.

First half run sparks Richmond win against UMass

The University of Richmond women's basketball team used a 28-10 run at the end of the first half to propel it to an 82-68 victory over the University of Massachusetts Saturday afternoon at the Robins Center. Sophomores Brittani Shells and Crystal Goring and junior Danielle Bell led the charge during the final 7:33 of the first half.

Spiders set to open spring season at Wake Forest

This weekend the University of Richmond women's tennis team will play its first matches of the spring season, following a productive fall semester spent competing in four different tournaments. The team will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., to play Wake Forest University at 3 p.m.

Men's hoops edges URI at home, 78-75

The University of Richmond men's basketball team finally found a way to win a close game, beating the University of Rhode Island 78-75 at the Robins Center. Freshman Francis-Cedric Martel hit a game-winning jumper with 15 seconds left on the clock.

Spiders take down undefeated No. 25 Wake Forest 45-33

Sloppy play highlighted Tuesday's women's basketball game at the Robins Center against the No. 25 Wake Forest University Demon Deacons, but Richmond nevertheless earned a 45-33 win, defeating a ranked opponent for the first time in nearly two years. Healy headed to Chattanooga with former D-coordinator

Defensive coordinator leaving Richmond to coach Chattanooga

University of Richmond defensive coordinator Russ Huesman has accepted the head coaching position for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, just three days after his defense held Montana to 39 yards rushing in the team's 24-7 national championship win. Huesman, a 1983 graduate of Chattanooga, was announced as coach during a Monday press conference at the same stadium where 48 hours earlier, he had helped Richmond win its first NCAA national championship in any sport in school history. "This is my dream job," Huesman said.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- After it became clear the University of Richmond would win its first national championship over the Montana Grizzlies 24-7, players doused coach Mike London in water, then charged the field to congratulate Montana and begin celebrating. Students, parents, alumni and other fans dropped from the stands at Finley Stadium, rushing the field to celebrate with the championship Spiders.
