Women's soccer players and coaches described this season as a series of ups-and-downs. "It stinks that toward the end it was more downs," senior back Sarah Hilt said of the season, which began with a 9-2-1 start, the strongest in school history.
Head coach Matt Barany has ensured the women's swimming and diving team won't be competing against any Atlantic 10 Conference teams until the championship so the team can compete against teams ranked higher. So, do the Spiders get discouraged swimming against superior teams all season? Barany said the Spiders weren't the disheartened ones. "It's discouraging for the rest of the A-10 because they only see us once a year." And for the past seven years, that one sighting has proved ineffective in conquering the Spiders, who have taken home the A-10 trophy every year since 2002. "We really don't talk about [our record] that much," said Barany, who has been coaching the swim team for four years.
Sixteen teams, 15 games, four weeks and one reason I prefer the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision: the playoffs. On Saturday, the regular season will end and at 7 p.m.
There was no magical upset this time. The University of Richmond men's basketball team hung tough, but fell just short of a win versus Syracuse University Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome, losing 76-71 during the Spiders' first of five nationally televised games this year. "I think we all feel that we should have won this game," junior guard David Gonzalvez said of the loss, televised on ESPN.
The University of Richmond may have allowed the University of Delaware to score two defensive touchdowns, but the deciding factor of Saturday's game was offensive touchdowns -- the Spiders had four and the Blue Hens had none. Sophomore Kevin Anderson scored 15 of his team-leading 17 points during the first half to propel the University of Richmond men's basketball team to a season-opening 81-57 victory over Randolph-Macon College. "We were just so hyped to come out and start the season," Anderson said. The Spiders were never behind in the game -- played in front of 5,415 people at the Robins Center -- and took the lead for good with a layup by senior Jarhon Giddings with 17 minutes, 50 seconds left in the first half.
The University of Richmond men's cross country team will send a runner to the NCAA National Championship for the first time in 29 years. Junior Matt Llano finished seventh at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship with a time of 30 minutes, 28.5 seconds in the 10-kilometer race held at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, N.C., on Saturday.

The University of Richmond lost to No. 18 University of Massachusetts during the Atlantic 10 Championship on Saturday. The Spiders lost 2-0 to the Minutewomen on goals from Mary Shea at the 20th minute of the first half and Cher King with just less than 23 minutes remaining in the game.
Next Saturday, the Spiders will kick off their season with a home opener against Randolph-Macon College at 8 p.m.

The football team's 12 seniors have an impressive resume: four consecutive winning seasons, two conference championships and the longest postseason run in school history. "We wanted to leave our mark and kind of turn the program around," senior defensive lineman Lawrence Sidbury Jr.
Featured sports content has been different since the World Series ended a few weeks ago, and most of these changes point to the same glorious fact - college basketball season is coming. Because I began my time as sports editor toward the end of the NCAA basketball tournament, I don't think I was able to fully convey just how much I love college basketball.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The University of Richmond football team improved to 7-3 this season after beating the Hofstra University Pride 34-14 on Saturday, a win that came off senior tailback Josh Vaughan's two touchdowns and career-high 240 rushing yards -- the fifth-best game performance in school history. The Spiders stormed out early in a heavy rain at Schuart Stadium, scoring on their first five possessions to make the score 27-0 after the first half.
On Senior Night, the University of Richmond men's soccer team got shut out for the eighth time this season, falling to the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies 2-0 and ending any chance of an Atlantic 10 playoff berth. "It's horrible for our seniors to lose on their night," said redshirt freshman goalie Brock Tomlinson, whose team is now 2-12-3 and 1-4-3 in the A-10. The Spiders honored their four seniors -- Thomas Kale, Brennan Lincoln, Scott Loesser and Delano Pierre -- with a brief ceremony before the start of the game. Sophomore Brett Allen scored first for the Bonnies during the 40th minute of play.
The football team may have had this weekend off, but the University of Richmond Stadium didn't get a break. Instead, a yellow midfield circle and goal box were painted over the white yard lines, goal cages replaced goal posts and stadium staff members prepared to welcome local soccer fans. An announced crowd of 3,387 waved flags, blew air horns, snapped pictures and chanted "U.S.A, U.S.A.," as they watched the U.S.
