Benford seeks track and field NCAA berth

After a disappointing weekend at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championships for the men's and women's teams, redshirt senior Andrew Benford is still working to earn a spot at Nationals. The Notre Dame Last Chance Invitational in South Bend, Ind., is a meet for athletes who are on the bubble of competing for an NCAA title, but haven't qualified yet.

Shells sets records, but wants more

Senior guard Brittani Shells makes breaking records look as easy as her signature reverse finger-roll layup. Shells became the University of Richmond women's basketball team's second all-time leading scorer on Senior Day on Saturday against St.

Kevin Anderson is ______

Kevin Anderson scored 20 points in Saturday's win against the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, surpassing the 2,000-point mark and making him the third all-time scorer in University of Richmond basketball history. While Anderson is not leading this year's team in scoring or assists, he is the most important part of the offense, whether he touches the ball or not.

Darkness forces Richmond's game to end in a tie

University of Richmond freshman Nick Poulos struck out with the bases loaded to end the 10th inning and force Richmond's game against state-rival Virginia Military Institute to end in a 6-6 tie Tuesday evening at Pitt Field. Pitt Field, which does not have lights, started to get dark during the ninth inning and it was decided before the 10th inning that it would be the last inning of the game.

Richmond drops the second in weekend series vs. Bucknell

The University of Richmond dropped the second of its three-game series, 5-3, against Bucknell University on Saturday evening after being held scoreless through the final five innings. The Spiders and the Bisons went back and forth during the first few innings at Pitt Field, but an RBI single during the sixth inning by Bucknell first baseman Doug Shribman broke the 3-3 tie and put the Bisons ahead for good. Richmond began the game with a home run by left fielder Robby Massar during the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. "I was just hoping to put a ball in play honestly," Massar said.

Men's lacrosse looks to build tradition

The University of Richmond's men's club lacrosse team continues to gain legitimacy as it begins its first season playing under the varsity club title. The team gained varsity club status last semester, which is a new term used nationally to describe a sport that resembles a varsity sport, but is not formally recognized as one, said Tom Roberts, the director of the Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness.

Men's rugby enjoys a good record, good times

Senior Rudy Pett started playing rugby during fall 2009, when he studied abroad in Argentina. He joined the University of Richmond men's rugby club when he returned to school in the spring, already a second-semester junior. "Some friends of mine at UR had been asking me for a few years if I wanted to give rugby a try, but I had never been too interested," he said.

Playing into the golden years

Senior Day, the ubiquitous rite of passage for athletes, evokes nostalgia and releases a flood of memories. Though my last Senior Day was in high school, a few weeks ago during intramural basketball playoffs, I had extreme deja vu.

Miguel Cabrera: Lucky to be in Detroit

My favorite moment of last year's Major League Baseball season was when Detroit Tigers fans gave umpire Jim Joyce a standing ovation a day after his blown call robbed Tigers' pitcher Armando Galarraga of a perfect game. Galarraga had retired 26 consecutive Cleveland Indians batters last June and needed one more to notch perfection, something only 20 pitchers in MLB history had accomplished. When Galarraga stepped on first base on the next play, a full step ahead of the runner, he and the almost 18,000 fans at Comerica Park thought he had become the 21st pitcher to record a perfect game, but Joyce called the runner safe. "It was probably the most important call of my career and I missed it," Joyce said after the game. Joyce and Tigers fans spent the time after the game lamenting the call, but the next day Detroit fans did what they do best -- they forgave him.
