Beyond the Syllabus: Michael Davison

What do you do on the weekends?

I love the Green Bay Packers and smoke Cuban cigars. Cuba is my research — I have done a 70-minute documentary on the blending of Afro-Cuban styles with jazz, and have been to Cuba over 15 times in the last ten years. I'm in the process of writing a book on Cuban music styles.

What's the craziest thing you did when you were in college?

On audition day, the students at Eastman would do their best to dissuade the high school auditionees not to attend the school (I don't know why ...). So, we would stage "events." On one such event, I was a tour guide for a group of unsuspecting high schoolers and their parents and we staged a person smashing a trumpet just outside a practice room, at the school ... by a classmate of mine. (I don't think any of those who witnessed this came to the school.)

What's one thing your students would never guess about you?

I used to wear an earring and have a tattoo! Man, I'll never live this down . . .
