Spiders head to A10 play with 18-8 win vs Tribe

The University of Richmond lacrosse team capped its out-of-conference schedule with a with a season-high 18 goals in its victory over The College of William & Mary Wednesday night at Robins Stadium. Before the start of the game, the chances that the game would be able to be played appeared slim.

Trial date set in football player's hit-and-run trial

The trial of University of Richmond football player Jimmy Speros is set for 9:30 a.m. on June 11, following his preliminary hearing in the John Marshall Courts Building on Monday. Speros arrived at the courthouse early Monday accompanied by his father, Jim.

Spiders lose second straight, 15-9, to Princeton

After losing in a high-scoring contest Saturday, the Richmond Spiders had a similar performance on Sunday as they lost the third and final game of the series against Princeton University, 15-9. In the early innings, the game was low scoring.

Spiders looked for depth in open tryout

The Richmond Spider football team held an open tryout the week before spring break in an effort to fill out its roster with non-scholarship players. "The NCAA mandates our number of scholarship athletes," head coach Danny Rocco said.

Corp and others participate in Richmond's NFL Pro Day

The University of Richmond hosted its NFL Pro Day on Friday. Coaches from nine NFL teams watched six former Spiders practice in Robins Stadium. The six players who participated in the Pro Day activities were Aaron Corp, Tremayne Graham, Tre Gray, Richard Muldrow, Michael Parker and Colin Pehanick. In addition to the Richmond players, there were also four players from Liberty University and two players who were independently represented. "We had a really good turnout of NFL coaches for our Pro Day this year," said Danny Rocco, Richmond's new head football coach. The NFL teams represented at Pro Day were the Browns, Dolphins, Eagles, Falcons, Giants, Jets, Redskins, Saints and Vikings. The players were assessed in various drills, including the bench press, vertical jump, broad jump, 40-yard dash, shuttle run, long-shuttle and three-cone drill.

Spiders advance in the WNIT with 22-point win vs. Miami

Richmond picked up its first postseason victory in two years with a 76-54 win over Miami (OH) University Thursday night at the Robins Center. Facing a team that averaged just under 70 points per game in its 21-win season, Richmond coach Michael Shafer added some wrinkles to his defense by pressing the Red Hawks all game and switching on defense.

Richmond's 11-game win streak snapped by George Mason

The University of Richmond baseball team gave up eight runs in the final two innings to lose, 12-10, to George Mason University on Tuesday, ending its 11-game winning streak. Pitcher Andrew Blum was able to overcome a shaky start to give the Spiders five strong innings.

Men's varsity club lax starts season with three wins

In its first full season under varsity status, the University of Richmond men's lacrosse team moved to 3-0 to start the season after a recent trip to Florida. The team posted a season-opening win at Eastern Carolina, 17-5, before traveling to the University of Miami Feb.

UR football player facing up to 10 years in hit-and-run case

Richmond football offensive lineman sophomore Jimmy Speros was arrested Wednesday afternoon on felony charges of a hit-and-run causing personal injury -- a class five felony -- according to Dionne Waugh of the Public Affairs Unit of the Richmond Police Department. According to the Crime Incident Information Center of the Richmond Police Department, Speros was driving a 2011 Dodge pickup truck that collided with a 2003 Nissan SUV at the intersection of Patterson Avenue and Charles Street at approximately 9:09 Saturday night. Speros's truck eventually came to a stop after crashing into a utility pole, and the driver of the SUV crashed his car into the brick wall of a parking lot nearby, Waugh said.

Football lineman arrested on felony charges of hit-and-run

Richmond football offensive lineman redshirt sophomore Jimmy Speros was arrested Wednesday afternoon on felony charges of hit-and-run causing personal injury, and if he is convicted could face up to 10 years in prison, according to a report by Nick Dutton and Angela Pellerano of CBS6. According to NBC12's Andy Jenks, Speros was later released on a $3,500 unsecured bond on Wednesday and will appear in General District Court today. According to CBS6, Speros, who was driving a pick-up truck, collided into an SUV that was going east on Patterson Ave.

Spiders sink Flyers, 82-71, on Senior Night

On Senior Night for University of Richmond's men basketball team, the six seniors on the team scored a combined two points, but they were the loudest. With 1:32 left to play in the game and the Spiders leading, 71-60, senior guard Francis-Cedric Martel took the ball, drove into the lane and jumped high into the air over University of Dayton center Matt Kavanaugh for a dunk that brought the crowd to its feet.

Spiders claim their first victory of the 2012 season

Coming off a string of postponements and cancellations, the University of Richmond baseball team continued its first home games Saturday in a double-header against Niagara University. After losing the first game, 11-10, off an 11th-inning home run, the Spiders made a statement in game two, winning, 10-1, for their first victory of the season. "This win is huge," Richmond starting pitcher Jacob Mayers said.
