Richmond football brings in 17 players for the 2011 season

For head football coach Latrell Scott, this year's 17-member recruiting class was all about filling needs, he said. After last year's season was plagued with injuries, Scott set out to find versatile athletes that were playing more than one position for their high school team, he said. One of the biggest needs that Scott wanted to fill was the offensive and defensive line, he said.

Women's tennis picked as A-10 preseason No. 1

The University of Richmond's women's tennis team has been picked to finish first in the Atlantic-10 Conference this spring. The team has won the conference title the last two years, so senior Kelly Tidwell said it was no surprise to be ranked at the top again. Richmond usually plays against only two to three conference teams during the regular season because head coach Mark Wesselink works hard to get the team good competition outside the A-10 conference, Tidwell said. Wesselink said that this year's out-of-conference schedule features teams that are similar to Richmond in talent. "We expect a lot of close matches," Wesselink said.

Richmond wins slow-paced game against St. Joe's, 62-52

The resiliency of a basketball team can be tested many ways. A key player can get injured or be in foul trouble, a bad call by the referees can give the other team momentum or, as in the case that the University of Richmond found itself in Wednesday night, the opposing team can get offensive rebound after offensive rebound.

Men's tennis focuses on mental, physical progress

The men's tennis team expects to progress mentally and physically and hopes to finish the season as a top contender in the Atlantic-10 conference tournament. The team had a successful fall season with its new head coach, Ben Johnson, and is ready to improve. A change in the head coaching position can pose certain difficulties to a team: following new practice regimes and acclimating to different techniques and expectations.

Women's basketball focuses on A-10 play

The University of Richmond women's basketball team had a slow start this season, but is aiming for a big finish: the Atlantic-10 conference title and an invitation to play in the NCAA Tournament. With a 13-5 overall record, the team entered conference play early this month and claimed three successive wins against George Washington University, the University of Massachusetts and the University of Rhode Island. Players such as Brittani Shells, Crystal Goring and Abby Oliver contributed high scores during each game, but the team attributed a unique chemistry both on and off the courts to its success. "I think all really great teams have good chemistry," coach Michael Shafer said.
